Dimethyl maleate (DMM), also known as *dimethyl (Z)-but-2-enedioate*, is a colorless transparent oily liquid with a relative density of 1.152 g/mL at 25°C. It exhibits high solubility in alcohols and ethers, partial solubility in toluene and chloroform, and limited solubility in water.
