Basic properties

Diethyl maleate (DEM), chemically known as *diethyl (Z)-but-2-enedioate*, is a colorless transparent oily liquid with a relative density of 1.064 g/mL at 25°C. It exhibits high solubility in alcohols (e.g., ethanol, methanol) and ethers, moderate solubility in toluene and chloroform, and notable water solubility (approximately 2-3 wt% at 20°C), distinguishing it from less polar maleate esters.
